Empowering Child and Youth Support Organisation (ECAYSO)

St. Andrews Academic Centre P/S

About the Organization

Projects:

The Organization has got a number of income generating projects aimed at sustaining its activities and also involving the youth and children in these projects so as to learn skills which will help them to be resourceful in their communities.

Below is the full information about the school project, and all the other projects run by the Organization.

ST. ANDREWS ACADEMIC CENTRE PRIMARY SCHOOL:

Started a Primary school under church foundation (Church of Uganda) with a good number of pupils but with a few teaching staff because the work was almost voluntary. After a year, we decided to shift the school from the church because the church had a small portion of land so we are now operating on our own land which is some how big and enough for all our projects.

ST. ANDREWS ACADEMIC CENTRE PRIMARY SCHOOL is located along Kaliro Road about two and a half Kilometers away from the road in Nampirika Village Nakalama Sub-County in Kigulu County of Iganga District.

The school currently boasts a population of over 300 pupils and this population is being managed by a staff of ten teachers and two non-teaching staff. However more are needed. The school has seven classes i.e. from Primary One to Primary Seven.

 PROJECT: TWO: BOREHOLE PROJECT.

In year 2007, we managed to collect some little money by ourselves and we got a borehole from the Uganda National water and Sewerage Corporation however on credit.

This Borehole is benefiting our pupils and the entire Community at large.

CARPENTRY PROJECT:

We received some Carpentry Machines from our friends of Women International, which we are so far using in training of our youths in the community.

We have been able to convince a number of youths who have been criminals, idlers; those practicing drug abuse etc in the community and involved them our projects which has changed their lives. Through these projects many of them have got skills, which help them to be self-reliant. However due to the increasing demand of skills in the communities there is need for more equipments for the smooth running of the projects.

BRICK LAYING & CONCRETE PRACTICE:

This is the most wanted project in the communities as it is cheap that is to say; Materials are readily available and many youths have lived a self reliant life through these projects thus increased number recruits. From this project bricks are now used in the construction of our classroom and others sold whose money facilitates some other activities.

POULTRY PROJECT:

Children and staff of the ST ANDREW ACADEMIC CENTRE PRIMARY SCHOOL have benefited a lot from this project since may 2007 as resourceful personnel from the Agricultural office in the district are invited to come and give them more skills on how to carter for the birds.  So far we have a number of birds of local breed, which are kept in a building. Eggs are sold and others for our children’s’ break fast.

PEER EDUCATION:

We also have a program of peer Education where youths are trained to help their fellow youths (peers) to change their behaviors in order to avoid HIV/AIDS this project is under UGANDA SCOUTS ASSOCIATION because most of the leaders in the project are scouts.  That is to say; the Executive Director is the peer education supervisor in the Sub-County, the Chairperson being the District Executive Commissioner of Scouts and the rest are peer trainers.

TAIROLING:

As the Organization we managed to buy some three sowing machines, which were used to train our children, youths, and some other elders. However the demand is too big so we need to get more machines. It is from this project that we get some uniforms for our pupils.

ART & CRAFT:

We also started a project of art and craft where are number youths, children and elder people are participating. In this project we are aimed at empowering people and devoting their art and craft talents. So they make crafts and sell them and get some money.

COMPUTER TRAINING:

We are also training some of our youths computer knowledge because today we are ion a period or generation where technology is the order of the day but per now only have one computer set which is not enough for the number of youths we have who would like to be trained and get this knowledge.

Also we just have a small room in town where we take them for training and in shifts because in the village we don’t have eclectic power so if we happen to get more computers and power it will be the best.

CHALLENGES:

Despite all the achievements we have attained above, below are some of the challenges we are facing

1.       Inadequate funds to facilitate the workers in the Projects.

2.       There is lack of electricity in the community

3.       There is lack of enough class rooms for the increasing population for the pupils

4.       Lack of enough furniture to make sits for our pupils.

5.       Lack of enough equipment for the vocational activities

6.       Ignorance if the community about education where most of the people have resorted to quarrying activities in the near by rock children inclusive.

 FUTURE PLANS:

As an Organization we have got a number of future prospects as follows;

1.       SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION: Since most of our pupils study from temporary classrooms and under tree shade so we hope to build some permanent classrooms so that they can learn comfortably.

2.       BUYING FURNITURE: This is for making sits for our pupils since most them sit down uncomfortably.

3.       DEVELOPING ALL OUR PROJECTS: e.g. buying more birds in poultry, more tools in carpentry and concrete practice projects, more tailoring machines and buying more computers.

4.       Reduce the number of illiterates on the community by giving them free and good education system.

5.       TO BEGIN A YOUTH REFERRAL HEALTH CENTER; we have got a vision of putting up this project in our community because our community is quite remote and far away from town where the hospital is so many people suffer and die on the way to the hospital, pregnant women always give birth during their way to hospital which is hazardous.

6.       TO BEGIN A PIGGERY UNIT; we are thinking of starting this project because it is quite development in our country today. We have got enough land where we can practice it from. We think that this project is going top improve ion the standard of living of youths.

7.       TO BEGIN A SECONDARY SCHOOL; since we started a primary school in the project, we have found out that most of our pupils after primary level suffer a lot in making it to secondary education and other high institutions so we feel like solving their problem and completely help them.

8.       TO INITIATE A MUSIC INDUSTRY; in our project, we have got a number of musicians we the leaders, pupils and some of our youths so far we have recorded some albums and some gospel songs for our youths and pupils. In our district we have got a music production called SHALOM PRODUCTIONS (PEACE) where all Gospel musicians (Up coming) are. And we one of the leaders in the production so we feel like more developing it if we happen to get some funds so that we can buy some music instruments and also a music recording studio.

9.       TO BUILD A HOSTEL; most of our pupils and youths move long distances from those communities to school and we also have some others from different districts who are willing to join us incase we have a hostel so we are thinking about putting it in place.

10.    TO BRING ELECTRICITY; since most of our projects like computer and carpentry require electricity, we feel like trying our level best to see that we get electricity in the community.

11.    TO BEGIN A VOCATIONAL SCHOOL

In order to reduce the problem of lack of employment, we have discovered that job creation is better than job seeking. Therefore, we feel like empowering youths with vocation skills like; Carpentry, Tailoring, Brick laying, Computer training etc, that they may be able to begin their own jobs for self reliance.
